How long will the balloons stay up?

A helium-filled 11" latex balloon is published at 18–24 hours indoors; the same balloon treated with Ultra Hi-Float is published at 1–4 weeks. Foil balloons are published at "at least 3–5 days" and Qualatex Bubble balloons at approximately 2–4 weeks.

Those four numbers cover most corporate décor. The material decides the answer far more than anything else does, which is why the first question on a brief is what the installation is made of rather than how big it is.

Every published figure assumes an indoor, climate-controlled room. Outdoors, and in hot or humid conditions, the window shortens — by half in hot, humid weather according to the HI-FLOAT Company, and by an unpublished amount outdoors.

What does a float-extending sealant actually do?

A sealant coats the inside of a latex balloon so helium escapes through the wall more slowly. The HI-FLOAT Company publishes 1–4 weeks for a treated 11" latex balloon against 18–24 hours untreated, and Qualatex states the treatment can increase latex flying times up to 25 times.

Definition

Ultra Hi-Float is a clear, water-soluble coating applied to the inside of a latex balloon before it is inflated. It dries into a thin barrier that slows helium loss through the porous latex wall. It is a latex treatment only — it does nothing for foil or Bubble balloons, which are already made of far less porous material.

The trade-off is timing. The HI-FLOAT Company states a treated balloon needs a few hours after inflation for the coating to dry, which is one of the reasons treated décor is prepared ahead rather than on arrival.

Which balloon holds longest — latex, foil or Bubble?

Bubble balloons hold longest of the common event materials: a 22" Qualatex Bubble is published at approximately 2–4 weeks and a 24" Deco Bubble at 3–5 weeks. Foil follows at "at least 3–5 days", and untreated 11" latex is the shortest at 18–24 hours.

What Does This Look Like for a Real Corporate Event?

A 9 a.m. product launch in SoMa, San Francisco

An indoor launch event opens at 9 a.m. in a climate-controlled office. The décor is a helium bouquet cluster in 11" latex plus a foil accent, and the client asks whether it can go in the night before.

What Shortens the Window

Why do outdoor balloons come down sooner?

No manufacturer publishes an outdoor float time. The HI-FLOAT Company states only that float times will be shorter outdoors, and instructs avoiding exposure to direct sunlight.

That gap is not an oversight. Sun load, wind, surface temperature and the swing between morning and afternoon vary too much between one storefront and the next for a single number to mean anything.

The practical consequence for a corporate installation is scheduling: outdoor décor is planned for the morning of the event, and the indoor published figure is treated as a ceiling rather than a promise. For a specific site, ask for a site-specific answer.

How much does temperature change the float window?

The HI-FLOAT Company states balloons typically float for half as long in hot, humid weather. That is the only published multiplier of its kind, and it is the one this page applies — an 18–24 hour window becomes 9–12 hours.

High humidity is called out separately: the HI-FLOAT Company states it will dramatically reduce a balloon’s floating life, and that treated balloons must be allowed to dry in an air-conditioned space in hot weather and a heated space in cold weather.

For anything between those two published states — a warm room with no air conditioning, or a cold loading dock — no figure exists. The calculator on this page shows a span between the two published anchors and says so, rather than inventing a multiplier.

Why are big corporate installations usually air-filled?

Because air-filled décor is not fighting buoyancy. The HI-FLOAT Company publishes that an untreated 11-inch air-filled balloon loses about 20% of its air in two months, and that a treated one stays full size for over a month.

Garlands, arches, columns and step-and-repeat frames are therefore built air-filled on a structure, which is why a conference garland can be installed the day before a multi-day summit without a float-time conversation at all.

Qualatex publishes 18–24 hours for an untreated 11" latex balloon in standard and special colours, and 16–18 hours for metallic and pearl colours. Treated with Ultra Hi-Float, the HI-FLOAT Company publishes 1–4 weeks for standard colours and 1–3 weeks for metallic and pearl. All of those figures assume the balloons stay indoors in a climate-controlled location with the heater or air conditioner running.

Can balloons be installed the day before a corporate event?

It depends on the material. Foil balloons are published at "at least 3–5 days", 24" latex at 2–4 days, 3 ft giant latex at 3–5 days and Qualatex Bubble balloons in weeks, so all of those hold overnight comfortably. Untreated 11" latex is published at 18–24 hours, which makes a day-before install marginal — treating the latex with Ultra Hi-Float or installing on the morning of the event are the two reliable answers.

Why do balloons come down faster outdoors?

The HI-FLOAT Company states plainly that float times will be shorter outdoors and instructs avoiding exposure to direct sunlight. No manufacturer publishes an outdoor duration, because sun load, wind and temperature swing vary too much between sites. Treat any indoor figure as a ceiling for an outdoor installation, not an expectation, and ask for a site-specific answer for the actual location.

Does heat make balloons deflate faster?

The published float-time tables are measured indoors with climate control running, so a warm room without air conditioning sits somewhere between the published window and half of it.

Do air-filled balloons on a frame last longer than helium ones?

They last far longer, because nothing has to stay buoyant. The HI-FLOAT Company publishes that an untreated 11-inch air-filled balloon loses about 20% of its air in two months, and that a treated air-filled latex balloon stays full size for over a month. That is why garlands, arches and columns for multi-day corporate stands are normally built air-filled on a frame rather than with helium.
