What Size Balloon Installation Does My Space Need?

What size balloon installation does my space need?
Take the measured span of what you are dressing, multiply by 1.15 for the swag, and multiply the result by the balloons-per-foot figure for the density you want. An 8 ft doorway with a full arch is 24 feet of span, 27.6 linear feet of garland, and roughly 520 balloons in the garland alone at standard density.
The span itself depends on the format. A full arch runs up one side, across and down the other, so it is width plus twice the height. A stage backdrop garland runs across the top and down one side. A storefront or ceiling run is a single horizontal length.
That is the whole method. It is published here rather than kept in a quoting spreadsheet because a number you can check is worth more than a number you have to trust.
What is an organic balloon garland?
Definition
An organic balloon garland is a continuous run of balloons in mixed sizes — typically 5", 11" and 16" — clustered irregularly rather than in repeating pairs, so the finished shape reads as an uneven natural form instead of a symmetrical chain. It is the format behind most corporate entrance arches, stage backdrops and photo-wall frames.
The mixed sizes are why balloon counts differ so widely between suppliers. A garland quoted at 6 balloons per foot counting only the 11" balloons and one quoted at 19 per foot counting the whole mix can describe exactly the same physical garland.
Every count on this page includes every balloon in the mix, and the mix behind each density is printed below, so any figure here can be reconciled against a quotation written on a different basis.
How dense should the garland be?
Three densities cover almost all corporate work, and the difference between them is roughly a factor of two and a half in balloon count for exactly the same measured span.
Accent — 12 balloons per linear foot (4 × 11" + 8 × 5" per linear foot)
A visible line of colour that does not dominate the space. Used along a registration desk, a stair rail or a single doorway edge.
Standard — 19 balloons per linear foot (6 × 11" + 12 × 5" + 1 × 16" per linear foot)
The default organic garland. Full enough to read as a designed installation from across a room, and the density most corporate entrances and stage backdrops use.
Statement — 29 balloons per linear foot (9 × 11" + 18 × 5" + 2 × 16" per linear foot)
A dense, deep garland built to be the photographed object rather than the frame around one. Used for storefront openings, large stage backdrops and hotel ballroom entrances.

What formula does each format use?
Each of the six formats has one line of arithmetic, applied to the width and height you measure. All six use the same 1.15 swag allowance and the same balloons-per-foot figure.
- Entrance or doorway: run = (width + 2 × height) × 1.15
- Stage backdrop: run = (width + height) × 1.15 — across the top and down one side
- Storefront frontage: run = width × 1.15 — one horizontal run across the frontage
- Step-and-repeat photo wall: run = (width + height) × 1.15 — top edge plus one vertical side
- Ceiling run: run = width × 1.15 — a single linear run overhead
- Table or registration desk: run = width × 1.15 — along the front face
Columns are added wherever the format uses them, at a maximum spacing of 6 feet and a default height of 7 feet, then evened out across the full width. Each column consumes its own height in linear feet of balloon work.

How Does the Arithmetic Run on a Real Entrance?
An 8 ft × 8 ft office entrance with a full arch, standard density
A Bay Area technology company wants its main office doorway dressed for an all-hands. The opening measures 8 feet wide by 8 feet high and the brief is for a full arch rather than a corner accent.

What the Arithmetic Cannot Tell You
What does the venue decide rather than the tape measure?
The format, in most cases. Whether anything may be attached to the structure, whether rigging points exist, what the load limits are and where the egress routes run are venue decisions that come before any dimension.
A leased office that prohibits fixings rules out an anchored arch entirely, and the same 8 ft opening is then dressed with freestanding columns and a floor-standing arch instead. The linear footage barely changes; the build does.
This is why the sizing above is a starting point rather than a specification. Confirm the venue rules first, then apply the arithmetic to whatever format survives them.
Why is the balloon count given as a band?
Because a single number would be false precision. The reported band is ±15% around the arithmetic result, rounded to the nearest ten.
Real garlands vary within that range for reasons the arithmetic cannot see: how tightly the clusters are packed, how much the run doubles back, whether the garland sits flat against a wall or stands proud of it, and how many oversized feature balloons the design carries.
A band is also more useful commercially. It tells you the order of magnitude to budget for without implying a level of accuracy that no one measuring a doorway with a tape can actually deliver.
Does the installation need helium at these sizes?
Usually not. Garlands, arches, columns and photo-wall frames at these dimensions are normally built air-filled on a structure, so nothing has to stay buoyant and the install schedule is set by venue access rather than by float time.
Helium is reserved for the elements that have to float — ceiling clusters, bouquets and hanging pieces — and those carry published hold windows that decide when they can go in.

Why multiply the measured span by 1.15?
Because an organic garland is not a straight line. It drapes, swags and doubles back on itself, so the balloon work is longer than the distance it covers. The 1.15 swag allowance is this page’s stated convention for that difference, published so you can replace it: a tight, flat garland runs closer to 1.0 and a deep swagged one runs higher.
How far apart should balloon columns be spaced?
This page uses a maximum spacing of 6 feet, which gives 2 columns across an 8 ft entrance, 3 across a 12 ft frontage and 6 across a 30 ft dealership front. Spacing is then evened out across the full width rather than left uneven at one end. Six feet is a stated convention on this page, not a code requirement — venue rules, walkway width and fire egress take precedence over any spacing rule.
Does the balloon count include the small filler balloons?
Yes. All three densities on this page count every balloon in the mix, including the 5-inch fillers. That matters when comparing numbers: a garland quoted at "6 balloons per foot" counting only 11-inch balloons and one quoted at 19 per foot counting the full mix can be the same physical garland. The mix behind each density is printed on the page so the two can be reconciled.
Is this the size Balloon Décor would actually build?
It is a defensible starting point, not a quotation. The arithmetic here has no knowledge of your venue’s rigging rules, ceiling height, egress requirements or what the space already has in it, and those routinely change the format before they change the size. Send the measurements and the venue and you will get a proposal built around the real constraints.
